Experience

I am a licensed clinical psychologist & psychology professor who has over 20 years of cumulative experience conducting therapy, teaching, and writing in the area of psychology.

My Approach

I believe that a warm, healing relationship is the most important factor in successful therapy, not simply a set of impersonal techniques;

as such, I emphasize creating a safe and secure atmosphere to facilitate growth and positive change.

Taking a non- judgmental stance, I strive to see the world through your eyes, so that I can more deeply understand what your needs are and tailor my approach to best meet those needs.  For clients who come to therapy in distress, I focus on helping you learn coping strategies so that you feel better quickly.  Then, I focus on working with you to identify any frustrating or maladaptive patterns that you might find yourself repeating, with the goal of helping you to break free of these patterns and replace them with healthier and more satisfying ways of relating to yourself and others.

Areas of Specialization

Although I have experience treating a wide variety of issues and concerns, the following are primary specialties in my practice:

1) Relationship difficulties.  These include a wide range of interpersonal problems, such as recurring conflicts, frustrating interactions, and difficulty establishing intimate relationships.

2) Life transitions & developmental concerns. These include any transitions in life from late adolescence until the end of life. Examples include coping with becoming a new parent, dealing with divorce, job/career transition or loss, and concerns about aging.

3) Stress management.  Through relaxation exercises, cognitive strategies, and mindfulness- based interventions, I focus on helping you identify the various sources of stress or anxiety in your life and develop ways to relax, alleviate the suffering you experience in the face of stress, and generally better manage the demands of everyday life.

4) Search for Personal Meaning,  Common concerns in this category include existential questions and issues related to the meaning of life, re- examining one’s life and future goals, setting priorities, and also spiritual issues and concerns.
